Breathing and Relaxation Techniques
Relaxation training,
which consists of breathing and relaxation techniques, is the first step on your path toward Emotional Peace. The most basic building block for cultivating the experience of that peace and joy within us can be acquired by first learning, and then deepening the skill of relaxation. It's Not What You Think It Is!As I’ve mentioned
before,
I do not mean relaxation in the sense of its ordinary connotation in daily life, as in getting a massage or lounging poolside with a drink in hand. Rather, I am referring to a conscious intention of letting go: the active release of the physical tension that our bodies tend to garner and hold in response to negative thinking. We Don't Realize How Tense We AreI'm willing to bet that you've had the experience of noticing a great deal of pain and tension in your shoulders or neck, and wondering how it got that way all of a sudden. Of course, it didn't suddenly become that way, it was gradual, but you just didn't notice it over the course of your busy day! What I Really Mean By RelaxationI am referring to truly relaxing into the moment in a conscious manner, with the presence of mind to fully enjoy it, and appreciate it. This is only the beginning in the results of good relaxation training. How Deeply Do You Breathe?Breathing deeply is an integral part of relaxation training. Please try this exercise with me for a moment: put your hand on your stomach, and take a big breath. If your abdomen expands when you inhale, and air seems to flow in deeply to the pit of your stomach, you're on the right track. Breathing in this manner, when you exhale, your navel will pull in toward your spine. If you are breathing incorrectly, you are instead taking a shallow breath and pulling in your stomach, which pushes the diaphragm up so the air has nowhere to go. 5 Breath Progressive Relaxation ExerciseOnce you understand deep breathing, your next step would be to learn the 5 Breath Progressive Relaxation Exercise, and to use it often as possible throughout your day. This is a great proactive practice, that is, it will prevent the tension that "ties you up in knots."
